DJI FPV System iFlight XL8 Long Range-ish

This was a build I did for a friend to say thank you for some great generosity on his part. Nothing too special, but I wanted to get the DJI HD FPV System into a long range frame, and since I had already built out an iFlight XL5, doing an XL8 v3 was quite easy. Especially since he is using the full DJI stack and so there was no need to put Crossfire in there.

I was going to add GPS, but halfway through the build I realised that it would be pointless; the GPS data won't show up on the OSD, and since a Taranis radio is not being used, the data won't be remotely logged and so won't be useful. Hopefully later releases of the DJI firmware will get more of the BetaFlight OSD into the goggle view but for now, this will just have to remain a long-ish range machine.

can you hook up the gps to a buzzer/beeper so it will beep a certain sequence or some kind of alert when the fc has all of the sattelites locked and its home position locked through betaflight somehow? since it wont show how many sat's you have through the osd. Also, does anyone know if the gps via the osd is in the works for dji?

I'll see what I can do; as this is not my machine, I'll have to see what my friend has captured with it (if anything, he's been out of the country). But I am sure I can get something to show off. :-)

Thank you, much appreciated!

Is your friend using patch antennes on his dji goggles? If he is i would call this a long range build instead of long range-ish.

Jayembee67   Oct 23, 2019

I'll make sure he does at least once so I can claim the same! :-)

There still may be use in combining the GPS LUA script, and enabling RTH - but would be a legit spooky thing to have it start flying itself without seeing an OSD message to that effect - if nothing else, the former might be nice.

Jayembee67   Oct 22, 2019

Yes, I did consider the RTH issue during the build, but again as you say, the lack of OSD integration put me off. And as he is using theDJI radio too, I wasn't sure what that would mean, so I just decided that I would let him make that call! ;-)

gps is very important for a long range build. you dont need it on your osd, but the failsafe return to home is important. super easy to set up iin btaflight

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
