Blueberry

My son dubbed this one "blueberry", so I thought ...why not?

This is my first attempt at a long range build. I'm choosing analog for this build, as I'm still collecting the parts to go digital.

The color scheme was supposed to be a bit more..."quiet", than what I've been building, but it's still pretty colorful.

Having already stated that I'm doing analog, I'm using the Foxeer reaper with 2.5 Watts of transmitting power, to see how far that'll get me. I'm also experimenting a bit with GPS and shielding some cables (the VTx and GPS cables are both shielded with copper and grounded to the FC).

I saw this interesting ViFly battery module for GPS receivers that came with a beeper, but I haven't pulled the trigger on it yet. Even though that Mark4 frame is pretty roomy I'm trying to keep it light for now.

Motors were super cheap, which makes me cross my fingers and hope they won't fail catastrophically, but they look fairly nice...they also come from the exact same address as my Xing motors...same box, just a different label...and price.

Camera is nice...I took it out of the purple "Pob racer" and put a smaller runcam in there, let's see how this performs.

Ok, I thought I could be patient...but who am I kidding?
I did a test before getting all the "bells and whistles"...just to summarize:

  • no GPS (yet)
  • no 7 inch props (using 5 inch)
  • no 6S battery (using 4S)
  • not all screws in (missing a bunch...but that's just me being lazy)

...no problem
The quad hovered just beautifully. Motors did not heat up, OSD looked good, response to the sticks felt good...nice. Can't wait for that first big flight.

Small update: I was not ready to spend the ~$150 on a dark lithium pack, but I was able to put some 18650s that were already in series as 4S rated at 3000maH into a parallel setup...so that should give me ~6000maH at 4S for long range? I'll put some pics, haven't done and long test flights yet, but probably this weekend.

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
