first ever seen MultiWii powered "drone" was a tricopter on the project page. this one got me into the hobby. but it took about two - almost three - years to get my hands on this frame. first i've seen this frame on the flyingfolk website/shop, than i added it to my "wishlist" at hobbyking.
i than found it on eBay for sale by hobbyking and ordered one. i also ordered some motors and fitted the CC3D to this frame. than i had my gopro in front with a vtx attached to it, and was happy flying it LOS. i experimented with some props, one combination was two 5" front and a 6" for the tail.
i couldn't say if this was a thing or any good, because i never had it flying fpv. all the gopro footage i have tells nothing useful.
i tried openpilot, librepilot, cleanflight, betaflight, triflight on CC3D and naze32rev6, but nothing was working really good as dRonin! in dRonin you can have autotune for pid setup, and this is working amazing!
i'm trying to get the trifecta back in the air, this time with an AIO fpv system. only thing i need to fix is to get some osd.
I've built a dozen tricopters of various sizes over the last few years. From that experience i can say that Betaflight with RPM filtering is the best thing going for a Tricopter. Specifically, it pretty much eliminates prop wash, making the copter super easy to tune.
dRonin is ok mind you, except when you need to tweak the autotune or play with the gyro filters. Cant say that my experience with that was successful because i ended up returning to BF just as motor filtering came out.
AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..

I have yet to build a tri, but I know of a few people who did what that page says and they all reported MUCH easier tuning and better performance.
