Another HoverBot

I needed a small quad for indoor and backyard flying, and I really liked the style of the Hoverbot. The biggest problem during the build was the brittle wires of the motors had a tendency to snap off at the tiny soldering points - it's definitely a good exercise in precise soldering. The stack is also a little higher than I would have liked, and because of the way the Micro Lux/4-in-1 ESC is oriented, it makes the most sense for the battery lead to stick out the front. I could have oriented it slightly differently, but it's a small cosmetic thing that I can live with.

It flies fantastically - tons of thrust with 2S. Eventually I'll go for 3S but I'm very happy for now.

6/13 Update

I've replaced the motors as first pictured. It turns out that running propellers on a friction-fit motor is a horrible, horrible idea. No amount of dental floss or superglue is going to create a perfect fit. I dumped the Racerstars and went for the AirbladeUAV 1103s which I can't recommend enough - they have mounts for screwing in props, and also use flexible silicone wires which are super easy to work with. I've also dumped the original Lumenier AIO Cam/VTX and opted for a smaller, hopefully-more-durable VM275 variant. I had two Lumenier AIO Cam/VTX die on me for mysterious reasons; and will not give them another chance. The smaller VM275 mounts nicer anyhow, with the Hoverbot cam mount.

How's the range on the micro lux?

I fly a smaller field with this one, so I've never really gone past 100 meters, but it hasn't dropped signal yet.

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
