Diatone 2018 GT-R90 Mods/Upgrades

The Diatone GT-R90 is such a fantastic little beast but I wanted to modify some of the original gear for a little better performance.

First I replaced the OEM dipole VTX antenna with a Lumenier AXII. I wanted to utilize the original antenna mounting option but ultimately end up with an upright antenna. In order to accomplish this I used a heat gun to soften the oem antenna mount and curve it upwards into a more vertical orientation. The Lumenier antenna is also quite a lot thicker so I needed to use a piece of heat shrink tubing to secure the antenna inside the mount. Lastly, I used a sort of 'handcuff' ziptie method to attach the end of the antenna to the GT-R90's antenna mount.

Second, I noticed that my video feed was pretty noisy and I think the voltage/power environment is pretty hostile on this quad. I wanted to add a capacitor for this reason, a 35v 470uf ultra low ESR, but also because the ESC is a BLHeli S which has braking enabled. Originally I mounted the capacitor directly to the ESC board where the battery cable connects. I wasn't thrilled about mounting it there because of how exposed it was in a crash. Instead I opted to mount the capacitor to the XT30 connector and heat shrink it all together as one unit.

During the capacitor install I noticed how small the factory battery connector wire was, I think it's only 20 gauge wire. I decided that I'd like to replace the wire with heavier 16 gauge wire. I could have probably reused the current sensor/XT30 combo but decided instead to just replace the whole connector and with one I had built with a capacitor already integrated.

In the end, the capacitor has helped the video feed slightly but hasn't removed the noise completely; I think I'd like to upgrade the camera in the future. The benefits of the thicker power wires and capacitor is tough to objectively measure but I 'feel' the quad has much stronger punchouts and better direction changes, perhaps improved torque in the mid throttle range too.

I have both 3S and 4S batteries for this quad but mainly use 4S lipos. I really like the Lumenier 500mah LiHV batteries but the Tattu 450mah 4S batteries are significantly lighter by 10 grams. I have tried both the Gemfan Hulky 1940 props and the Avan Micro props. They are both really great props and I think the Gemfan 1940s are better for 4S and the Avan Micros are better for 3S. However, the Avan Micros are significantly quieter so it's a little better for flying around people.

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
