White wizard
This is my build of the eachine wizard x220 stretched with pod.
I came across this pod design on Thinguniverse and decided to build this as my second quad.
This build uses the wizard arms and middle x plate to create a stretched X racer.
(you can use the X220s arms for a lighter build)

---The build ---
I bought the motors and esc's for cheap from a friend of mine.
After that i modified the littlebee's to run Dshot600 by removing the cap.

Preparation
A couple weeks later al the other parts came in, and i could start the build.
first i tried to fit all the 3d printed parts, and noticed a couple of things:

  • the bottom (lipo protector) holes in the corners are not big enough for the bold heads to fall in. So i grinded them smaller.
  • i glued the 4 nuts in the middle of the arms to the 3d part, so they stay stuck and i can loosen them from the bottom without taking the FC all out.
  • I put some m3 washers below the rubber standoffs to get enough hight so the strap has enough clearance to go under the fc.

Installing the cam
After that i installed the camera to the pod, on thingsuniverse a Runcam Micro Swift 2 is recommended, but because the arrow v2 micro was on sale i bought that one.
I needed to shorten the bolts that came with the camera to make it fit. And the fit if the camera in the POD is very snug.
So it was quite a wrestle to get it in. but once it is in it stays nicely in place and will not move ones tightened.
Note: The camera has a minimal angle of 30 degrees!

The rest of the build
After that is was a standard build, just with limited space to get everything in. I put some double sided tape between the FC - VTX - RC and secured it with an ziptie.
The arm protectors are orriginaly for the qav-r frame, but if you heat them a little with a heardryer you can get them to fit perfectly on the wizard arms.
I did not secure the antenna of the VTX with anything special, because it is an dipole antenna and it stays in place anyways.

---The Flying experience---

The first flight
The first thing i noticed was the power that the emax 2205 2600kv motors produced! they are just great on this 5 inch build, and real screamers.
The second thing i noticed was pretty heavy noise in the system, especially when flying slow.

After i played with the PID loop and filters for a while this was reduced, but still noticeable when flying slow.

This fly's completely different then the standard wizard x220. I think mainly because this is build like a streched-X instead of the normal X on the wizard.
For me this is a real race quad. And does that job good!
The cam needed some tweaking but is also pretty nice, and the lens has just enough protection from the POD to survive some heavy crashes.

And if we are talking about crashing, this thing can take a freaking beating! I did some in and outdoor racing and crashed alot with it. And you can just continue flying! really great. This also counts for the proppelors, the are really sturdy and are pretty cheap! so i like them on this high KV motors.

The only thing i cant get completely rid of is the noise when flying slow. Maybe i will try some 470uf caps for each esc to get rid of them. Otherwise i will replace the esc's with some newer ones. I chose for these mainly because i could get them really cheap.

I had one broken motor due to a gate that came inbetween the stator and rotor and ripped all the windings off.
Luckely a friend had some spares lying around. Appart from that unlucky accidident the thing took a beating.

I also orderd some spedix esc's to replace the old littlebee's. The should arive at the end of the week.

Here is some dvr footage from the last race session.
NOTE: the dvr is heavily overexposed in places, this is not the image i see when flying.

After some racing and crashing the flight controller had a unpredictable gyro issue.
It had a deviation, but the side was constantly changing.

So i changed the flightcontroller to a DYS F4 V2.

A also made a video about the build itself:

That's it for now, if you have any questions please leave a comment.

How did you flash the new firmware after removing the caps? I'm doing same thing to those same esc's

I think it’s the escs causing the noise trouble

Currently i'm running the 30A esc's. And from the OSD amp meter i don't think 20A esc's will be very happy with the 2205 2600KV on 5 inch xD
Do you also have them in a 30A version?

yeah i have the 30's. You cant go wrong with spedix. I vr just heard great things from the 20's

I second JC250 about the spedix 20a escs, they've been far more robust than my littlebee 30a escs (only running 4s) and I really can't argue with their size and weight (and price!). Unless you wanna run heavy props, those 20escs will be plenty (or any other high quality, up-to-date esc)

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
