AstroX X5 Freestyle

For a while I have been searching for a new freestyle frame, my current go to is the DemonRC Nox 5" frame, which I have been using since around December 2016. But with that being discontinued and electronics updating and changing all the time, I thought it was time to freshen up and try some new stuff - opinions later on :)
I wanted to keep as many parts as I could similar to my other rigs, familiarity with components I think helps with building and placement as its much easier if you know how the pieces work together already. The main new electronic component I am using which has changed from my previous setup is the HobbyWing 4in1 ESC. One thing I did was route the XT60 connector out the side of the quad, cable-tying the wire to one of the standoffs, then using one of the battery straps I am able to fully secure the connector away from the props. With this setup I am able to run most 1300-1500mah sized lipos on the top with no overhang at all, the ones I have tried specifically are the TBS Graphene 1300 4S, Tattu R-Line 1550 95C 4S, DemonRC Fusion 1500 4S and Pulse 1550 4S HV Graphene.

Also quick clip of some of the first flights :)

Firstly I have to say that the AstroX X5 is no doubt the highest quality frame I have seen and worked with, its so damn tidy. The chamfered carbon edges, clean hardware and simplistic design make it a really easy but good looking quad. The main reason I picked up the X5 over other options was that with the 35mm standoffs, I am able to have more clearence if I run a GoPro Hero 6 from the props, as the camera overhands the main body of the frame on the sides over the two front props. In the coming months I will be assembling an X5 purely for chasing and filming, which will be running a GoPro Hero 6 and low kv motors on 6S, it should be an interesting test for sure. Other than that, the X5 is certainly a frame to consider when you are building your next setup!

Motors:Alt Tag

The motors I decided to run on this setup are the DemonRC Inferno motors, these are just DemonRC branded BrotherHobby R3 2207.6 2550kv. They are certainly a very capable motor, freestyle and racing, I am a big fan of the open bottom motors, I think the motors are able to cool much more efficiently which means you are able to push and not worry about burning them up as frequently. Some say this style of motor lacks durability, but I am yet to break one! The motor also looks really good, the red base of the motor really complements the colours of the stator wiring and the black motor bell, and with the DemonRC logo etched on them it looks even cooler :) One thing I am a big fan of with these is their throttle response is incredibly smooth and linear, this makes getting that freestyle pop much cleaner as well as being able to dive into move agressive manouvers and have the power ready to react. Another great thing is from new these motors have enough wire to reach into the main body of any 200-220 sized quad, meaning no wire extensions needed if you run a 4in1, although I reused these motors so I had to solder some extensions.

ESC:
This is my second setup running the HobbyWing 4in1, my other being my CherryCraft Supreme long ranger, I have only heard good things about these ESC's, other than JusticeFPV exploding them, but that guys a complete noob anyway (shoutout to Gary). These run the classic BLHeli_S firmware which makes for really low idle speed and smooth flying characteristics, definitely something you want on a freestyle setup. As well as in this quad and my long ranger, these have been solid, my only thing is that they aren't technically 6S rated, although I know some have been able to run 6S on them without problems, it just seems a little sketch. Hopefully HobbyWing can bring us a 6S capable 4in1 in the future!

Flight Controller:
Again with all of my builds from the past year and a bit, I am running the FlightOne Revolt, this is the V2 board, exactly the same as the V3 however it just doesnt have the pin connector to plug into the FlightOne Bolt 4in1. This FC has been fantastic the whole time using it and I havent managed to kill one in a crash yet, and I have had some pretty bad ones! I am running one of the latest versions of FlightOne, mixed with some special juicy BlackBirdFPV (Damien Gans) settings, it flies amazing!

Crossfire Nano SE:
This is my first build using the CRSF Nano (SE - with the Immortal T). This was effortless to setup, I had to reflash my CRSF TX to 2.25 as I was on 2.06 which was too old to recognise the new Nano RX. Updating and flashing firmware was completely painless with the TBS Agent software. Following the pinouts and linking my Unify Pro's audio pin to channel 4 to hook up the CRSF SmartAudio for wireless VTX control, I installed the Rx into the rear of the rig, just with some foam tape. No problems at all, completely solid link control and SmartAudio control, perfect!

FPV Gear

Camera:
My current go to fullsize FPV cam is still the Runcam Swift 2 with the inbuilt OSD. This camera is fantastic, and combined with the Runcam 2.1mm (165° FOV) its perfect for me. The OSD function is as simple as wire up the voltage to the camera and then adjust its position on screen with the Runcam settings cable which comes with all the cameras. I prefer to have this in the bottom right with my name in the bottom left. I like having a simple OSD and not having tonnes to distract me, whether is flying some gnarly spot or whether its the finals in some big race, I don't want the extra distractions. The camera has great colours, focus and with the ease of changing setups it makes for a really good FPV camera.

VTX:
As with all my builds, TBS Unify Pro HV SMA, this build is running the full version, so up to 800mw output for all that freestyle flip flop madness. I mean what can I say, never killed a unify, never broken a UFL. It's the VTX to have in my opinion, with the effortless SmartAudio control combined with the TBS Crossfire system, it just outdoes any other VTX I have tried. Pair with the Unify I am using the fullsize TBS Triumph, great antenna, performance wise and durability, it's brilliant.

Props:
Lastly on the list is the props, I think prop choice is critical when aiming for smooth video and ultimate flight performance, my go to for over a year now has been the silky smooth HQ5043x3 V1S. These props are super light which allows them to spin up and have incredibly quick response as well as being powerful, maybe not as powerful as a 5050 on a freestyler, but the 5043 is the best combination of response, crispness, smoothness and power in my opinion. With these props being made of polycarbonate plastic, they are extremely durable as well, clipping brances with the fear of being taken out is gone (well unless you full on send it into a tree)

Hopefully you guys enjoyed reading this build, let me know if you would like to see more of these, I really do enjoy writing them and sharing my thoughts on builds and components with other pilots. Also if you have any questions let me know :)

I don't sadly

RZFPV   Apr 22, 2018

what are the flight times looking like? I was thinking about doing a similar build for a hero 6 with tbs master pilots, although i think i might wait to see your 6s setup...

have u made your filmjng 6s setup yet?

LeoFPV   Jun 28, 2018

I have, I need to do a write up of it :)

Did u ever do your 6s filming rig

Jodie Froster   Apr 22, 2018

What holds your FC in place?

LeoFPV   Apr 25, 2018

My FC just sits ontop of the long screws which I have securing the whole stack, never put any nylong nuts ontop as the gummies on the Revolt FC are super snug so its not going anywhere :). I only do it on racers where the FC might get moved in an extremely bad crash, but its much less of a problem for freestyle.

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
