I was excited to build another race quad, and the Tokio X has got to be one of the most full-featured race frames out there. There are tons of little details all over it, and paired with some RDQ goodness it was a really great build.
I like the "butter mounts" even if they complicate or limit the stack hardware choices somewhat - really I just need a more comprehensive inventory of hardware. The whole stack is isloated, although the 4IO ESC battery leads contact the canopy enough to diminish the isloation a bit. I also used an RDQ VTx/Rx 30x30 mount, which was handy, but still really pushes the available space to the limit. The canopy is really substantial, especially now that it's injection molded - I'm really not a fan of 3D printed stuff, unless there's really no way to make a certain part with a better process or material, or to meet a pricepoint or deadline. I can't see this thing breaking unless it gets run over by an SUV.
RaceDayQuads has so much excellent stuff right now - The Mach 2 is one of the best VTx options out there, and the "Badass" line of motors seems to be really good performance and durability with plenty of stator size and Kv options. The batteries are excellent as well, they're all still going strong and internal resistance hasn't crept up at all. Even the JBF4 FC is a joint effort with RDQ and it does really well. I've got nothing but good things to say about their products and customer service.
Perhaps of particular note to me is the ORT pagoda - ORT caught my eye with their 3-turn helical directional antenna (only $27) so I'm definitely trying that out, but right next to it was the <$10 Pagoda 2. That's a real steal compared to the Lumenier AXII which is about twice as much, so I may as well pick up a pair. My typical setup is a True-D with a 1.6dBic TrueRC long AXII, and a TrueRC 10dBic X-Air - I'm very excited to try the 7dBic Helical in place of or even next to the X-Air. I don't expect either the Helical or the Pagoda 2 to outperform the AXII or the Crosshair, but if they're close then I'll gladly still use them, even with future builds, simply based on cost.
I'm excited to have more race style flying to do, I don't do much flying at all unless it's at or near home for convenience sake, so it'll be good to mix it up. This quad seems so tough - it'll be perfect for high-speed bashing.
AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..
Read moreWith the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
