The Cragon Chameleon

This was my first home build. I own a TBS Vendetta, and I wanted to build something around the same size, yet more dynamic and responsive to fly freestyle. And of course ... with good looks! It weighs (excluding props & batteries, GPS) 347 grams. Installing the GPS adds another 22 grams to bring it to 369 grams.

I chose a Armattan Chameleon Ti 5" frame and combined it with a Matek F405-CTR flight controller. I intended to use the Lumenier BLHeli_32 35A ESCs, but alas they were out of stock. I settled on the KISS 32A ESCs and they perform fine in flight, but I wouldn't buy them again - they were pricey, don't have a built in buzzer, are hard to flash and the voice-over-motor gimicky. I added a Holybro GPS/compass to the build, as I find it super useful in locating downed drones in fields. The Holybro GPS/Compass is a bit big in size - I'd get a smaller one next time, especially as flight controllers like the Matek F405-CTR have a built in compass.

In the end the build cost a bit more than I anticipated, as I underestimated the fragility of the F405-CTR when soldering, burning out the gyro. I also started with a RunCam Swift 2, but despite it having a better latency, the HDR is not there - flying in low-sun conditions was too hard for my skillset - I switched to the Foxeer Falkor. Finally, n00b error - check the reverse/normal SMA polarity when buying the transmitter components ... that will save a few dollars.

When it comes to flying the drone, it's great - really responsive and the Matek flight controller works well. I fly it with a GoPro Session and a 1500mAh battery. Flying with a larger battery is possible but not so good - it hangs over the tail and causes imbalance. Unlike the TBS Vendetta, the Chameleon frame isn't designed for big batteries.

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
