Modified Storm Type - A

2  2  1

I bought my Type - A after flying a Syma X1 for some time. I want this build log to be a reference for people considering the chassis (I'm really glad I bought an RTF, it's hard enough learning to fly without having to learn quad PID tuning too). The V1 Type - A isn't on the website anymore, but most people are familiar with the general components.

Here's the V2 that's available now: http://www.helipal.com/storm-racing-drone-rtf-type-a.html

My big revisions have come each time I've really wrecked this thing (full drop from 80 feet twice in one session, and low @ roughly 20 mph on pavement earlier this week).

Changes/Upgrades

  • Printed a new upper deck from ABS (5g lighter than the carbon, and more crashable).
  • Removed all but 2 JST's from the power harness. Shortened ESC signal wires and relocated ESC's.
  • Mounted vTx on the upper deck.
  • Added GoPro mount.
  • Using Gemfan 5030 3 Blade's for now.
  • Been through a few revisions on motor guards and landing gear, all 3D printed. Will keep this updated with revisions, and happy to provide STL's for anything on here.
  • Adding a circular polarized antenna set tomorrow. We'll see how they do. (Update: The Neewer's shown in my parts list show up in a Boscam box. They also showed up SMA male, opposite from Amazon's photo)
  • Replaced all columns (by necessity, they were bent) and went from 6mm on the lower deck to 7mm. Helped accommodate the ESC's.
  • Added 90 degree Rx Antenna Mount

Definitely an ongoing process, lots of crashing. Should be good information for others starting out in 250 quads. Feel free to tell me what I could be doing better!

Cost list can be considered as a real cost of ownership, I'll list all consumables and anything I have to replace beyond the RTF kit.

Looking good. It looks like your vibration plate is mis-labeled as a flight controller. You can remove that label.

Good catch. Only bought it for the mounts anyway :).

Nice job.Now you have a truly custom quad.Again nice clean job.Do you have 5volts from each esc servo going into the CC3D?

Yes, I believe that's handled on Pin 2 on the stock ribbon cables.
