El Camino 3"

Ever since I started with the hobby I had a craving to build my own quad. I started out with a Babyhawk-R 2" micro, this was my first quad. I really like the concept of micro's since they are very easy to fly at schoolyards, parking lots, parks etc. After some crashes and broken parts, I upgraded to the 3" Babyhawk-R. After that, I decided to build my own 3" quad.

I like racing quads, but I also like freestyle flying and shooting cinematic HD video. Not too long ago I mounted the Runcam split mini 2 on my Babyhawk. This was a big step up coming from my DVR footage :) but unfortunately my flying was not so good. Still learning very hard.

I came in contact with a FPV group in my region, always fun to talk with like-minded people about the hobby. I was already in the brainstorming process for my build, and asked around for some tips. I was suggested frames from Tomoquads, and it did not take much time before I really liked the frames this guy was building. Lightweight, nice TPU printed parts, and not that expensive!

My eyes dropped on the "El Camino Pro V2" frame, which only weights about 34 grams and is designed specifically for 13xx/14xx motors. And, no propeller view in the footage! That was also one of my requirements.

Since this was my first build, I needed to invest allot in hardware and tools. This instantly made it a expensive hobby, but it is still worth it!

The build was 90% researching, reading manuals and practicing soldering etc. But the build came together really quick. I was planning on wrapping the motor wires in some wire mesh but I ordered the wrong size, so that is still on my todo list. Also I need to mount the antenna at the back, and want to add a LED strip with buzzer.

Maiden flight was good, had some minor VTx issues. Unfortunately my Runcam split mini 2 pcb died on me, so I am flying with a foxeer cam from one of my babyhawks. Maybe I'll wait for the Foxeer Mix.

I was planning on installing GPS on it, for fun. But I had to sacrifice it for my VTX smartaudio and telemetry since I only had 2 UARTs available.

Going to try 650mah 4s from Ministar with this quad, maybe 850.

I am already planning my next build, which will probably be a 5" freestyle quad.

Happy flying!

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
