Always love Armattan's designs
When they announced the Gecko I was intrigued
When they put it on sale during the holiday season I couldn't help myself
I threw some numbers into a spreadsheet and the step up in surface area from 3 to 4 inch is the biggest! I'm sure flight characteristics take into account a lot more than just prop area so it's doubtful it's a direct translation but I'm sure it has significant factor to it.
Prop Diameter | Square Inch | increase in area |
---|---|---|
2 | 3.1 | |
2.3 | 4.2 | 24% |
2.5 | 4.9 | 15% |
3 | 7.1 | 31% |
4 | 12.6 | 44% |
5 | 19.6 | 36% |
5.1 | 20.4 | 4% |
6 | 28.3 | 28% |
7 | 38.5 | 27% |
Four inch quads never made it mainstream. People have previously used lightweight 2204-2205 or 1806 motors that were quite heavy. With the ever increasingly powerful motors coming out, I think it's time for a revisit of the 4" with some higher performance light weight motors!
The lack of prop selection in the four inch world doesn't help either.
This will be my first foray into 4" and I've got some more in the pipeline :P
I stole the motors and FC from the b-roll clone. It was over powered and had stand-offs in the frame anyway. The b-roll was around 160g and flew really great given then absolute monstor motors. This thing is 10g more with 44% more prop area!

finally got to maiden this. I tried it with a 450mah 4s 75c Tattu battery that weighs 55g - surprisingly flew decent. 4" is so efficient that it cruised for over 3 minutes! It couldn't handle the punches though...instant battery warning!
Sorry, raw DVR, turn volume down!

printed a gopro session mount for this that works pretty well, just looks nasty because my printer is wacky
and more random raw footage from a previous sesssion

Also Gemfan quietly released a new 4" prop in their freestyle Windancer line. It looks promising with a 32 pitch. I really like their 3" 3028 Windancer so hoping this one won't disappoint either.
AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
