I got a pair of these frames for dirt cheap and I was always a sucker for the Talon from Karearea. So I bought the parts I needed to build a nice racing machine. The weight including battery stap and props (excluding battery) is 342g.

Challenges I encountered during building:

  • FrSky telemetry did not work out of the box using a FrSky R-XSR receiver. I had to use the (minuscule) uninverted SmartPort pad on the R-XSR but with this change everything worked like a charm. I flashed the receiver with the FPort firmware and didn't use SBUS at all.
  • The LED strip from Matek refused to work with the 5.25V the Mamba FC provides on its 5V pads. After adding a diode to the 5V cable to the LED strip it worked as expected.
  • The piezo buzzer on the Matek LED board is insanely loud. I had to gag it with some electric tape to not become deaf when testing on the bench.
  • You will need a little longer battery straps compared to quads with just a bottom plate because the aluminum profiles at the bottom of the frame add to the length.
  • If you do not provide some padding the battery will just sit on the front and bottom aluminum profile which will dent the battery on a hard crash. In put some adhesive silicone pads unter the bottom plate and over the profiles.
  • If you don't like to use the provided antenna mounting hole in the top plate mounting can be tricky. However, the top plate is really thick (3mm) so I don't think this will be an issue. I will add a Foxeer Lollipop antenna later and use either a 3D printed antenna mount or zip ties to keep it up and out of the props.

For me this was one weird floaty drone. So weird I actually liked it once I got used to it. It screamed like a dream. I stepped in front of a wall with the controller and lost signal long enough for it to make a splash in a flooded creek. After it didn't work. I'm rebuilding.
What's your input on the flights?

That sucks, bro. Hope you get it rebuilt nicely. I cannot tell anything about the flight characteristics because I have yet to maiden it. Will update.

Looking forward to a vid. Mine had a runcam2 on top when it went down. It's also DOA.

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
