Some new parts for micro builds have come out since I first built a 65mm Toothpick. Specifically, the Runcam Nano, and the NamelessRC 400mw capable VTx/DVR. The ImmersionRC PowerPlay is also relevant. Having the ability to record a higher bitrate 60fps video of my FPV feed, or a 720p30 onboard video (pre-OSD), is a definite must-try for me. I also updated the build with an R9 Mini for the stronger 900mhz link. The previous R-XSR would dip or even failsafe at the opposing corner of my front yard, when transmitting facing away, in the backyard, and through the house. Not a big deal, but inconvenient.
After a test hover I'm really impressed with the improvement in clarity in the video, as well as the VTx with TrueRC CP antenna - the previous camera was an AKK AIO-SA with a dipole that had been in use since my first QAV-Piko 2" build, smart audio never worked on it, even with AKK Betaflight versions, and it got extremely hot on 25mw, inducing static immediately upon power-on. The NamelessRC VTx seems perfect for my purposes on 25mw and with the TrueRC Singularity attached the improvement over a dipole whip should be noticeable. The Runcam Nano has great light handling so differentiation from objects and background should be great. The R9 Mini antenna is somewhat large for a 65mm frame, and with limited space to mount it horizontally - I just slapped it on just like one of my larger builds, at a 45 degree angle on one of the arms. I found an IPEX-4 ~900mhz antenna on Digikey that may fit better, similar to the TBS XF-Race, but IPEX-4 for the FrSky receivers, but that's gonna take a week to arrive and test.
Video soon, I haven't flown in some time and so I'll use this fresh iteration to get motivated. I'm excited to get back into flying the yard regularly.
Update, the proAnt 914mhz pcb antenna works well enough for this quad. I much prefer the mounting option here, and the form factor is much smaller. RSSI stays pegged at 99 but does dip a little behind building and walls. It's an improvement over the R-XSR regardless.
AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..
Read moreWith the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
