My daughter (10 going on 25) clearly has me figured out now; "Wait, you're building another one? Do you like building them more than flying them?"

She's probably right. :)

Supposedly, at some point in the future we're going to start to experience Spring here in the Northern Hemisphere. With that in mind, I'm slowly starting to inch up (pun intended) to slightly bigger builds with the idea of one day possibly moving up to a 5 inch quad like a big boy. This is the first 4S quad I've built and flown and well...it's going to be hard going back to smaller quads!

This guy is a ton of fun to fly - lots of power, really responsive and bloody fast (compared to what I'm used to).

The frame is actually a 4 inch frame but I'm using 3 inch props because I already have a bunch lying around and I found it tricky to find 4 inch T-mount tri-blade props (you can get 4" HQ biblade props but I tend to prefer the 'grip' of triblade propellers). Speaking of the frame, I really like this particular design from RVS - it's light but the 3mm thickness gives me confidence that it could handle a decent crash.

The frame supports the 26x26 whoop-style AIO boards or 16x16 nano stacks. I went with the former and used the GEPRC AIO which was easy to use and didn't give me any issues/problems. The board can support 20 amps continuously and a 30 amp burst, both of which are a bit overkill for these particular motors but it does afford me a bit of flexibility if I want to upgrade the motors and/or use the board in another build.

I used the FlyWoo 1404 3750kv motors and, along with looking pretty, they seem to be quite efficient. I'm getting almost 4 mins flight time with a 4S 650mAH lipo and that's with me flying like a maniac. You can get the same motors at 4850kv as well, I'd assume more power but shorter flight time with those.

I used the Eachine TriangleD VTX which has an 'ok' DVR (it's slightly better quality than the Goggle DVR) and an Frsky XM+ receiver because it's cheap and easy. I like the Caddx Baby Ratel but, like I mentioned in another build, FPV cameras are so subjective so go with what you know you like.

I tried a variety of props but felt the Emax AVAN Mini 3X2.4X3 triblades felt the best for this particular build. I also really like the more angular shape.

Without a lipo this guy comes in at 101g and 179g with a Tattu 4S 650mAh lipo. If you wanted to, you could drop that weight around 93g to by switching to the 3" version of the frame (save 5.5g) and swapping the VTX to something like the TBS Unify Pro Nano (saving 2.5g). However, I almost feel that the extra weight helps for freestyle; giving a greater sense of momentum when you 'fling' the quad than with lighter builds...or I'm just imagining that and talking out of my ass. It's a 50/50 chance on that one.

Overall, this is an easy, straightforward build and a lot of fun to fly.

Hey, we don't want to admit we are not quite normal. However, it's rather obvious for everyone else. 🙄
How do you make the little plastic nuts that hold the canopy stay down?
Nice build! 👍

:) So true!

I believe I got the plastic nuts from an M2 standoff set (something like this one - https://www.banggood.com/Suleve-M2NH4-M2-Nylon-Screw-Black-Hex-Screw-Nut-Nylon-PCB-Standoff-Assortment-Kit-300Pcs-p-1377786.html?rmmds=buy&cur_warehouse=CN) and I found them thicker than 'regular' plastic nuts and I haven't had any problems with them comming loose so far. Knock on wood!

The screw in the front of the TPU canopy is also really secure/tight which helps keeps things secure as well.

I lost all 4 plastic nuts on TP3 on its second or third battery pack. But TP3 comes with metal lock-nuts that are amazing and stayed on since then.

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
