A slightly basic budget build, based around very commonly available parts you can acquire in Britain. You can't got wrong with a Mamba stack and a ESC update (see FPV Know it all's videos on esc firmware) allows for all the latest features including rpm filtering. The objective here was to build something durable, easily repairable, but ultimately cheep. All making sure I would have the confidence to throw it around and push my limits, without worrying about not being able to financially recover from a crash.
The first unique part of the build would be the 30mm M3 socket bolts, allowing the entire flight stack to be solidly mounted. Trusting to the soft mounting to protect the pcbs from shock. This aside the whole frame is stock Source One, and a few extra arms are on stand-by. The first to go will be the 30mm aluminium standoffs mainly because they look a little naff, but also they aren’t the strongest in the world. I have access to a machine shop at work as will be looking to turn some nice titanium versions (at a fraction of the price some stores sell them)
The 3D printed parts are also pretty bog standard. They include a shelf to raise the receiver off the carbon, a video antenna mount, and skids. All printed from PLA, as that is what I had to hand, they are holding up fine for now and only take 20 minutes to print costing ~£0.08 each.
The main deviation from the norm is my previous fixed-wing experience meaning I was coming at this project with a Spekrum transmitter. The only real option was therefore the SRXL2. Not the best range but include telemetry and RSSI without me having to replace a transmitter. Again there are some excellent videos on the hook-up and now the software is there its pretty much solder and fly.
I'll keep this updated as I crash to let you know the weaknesses.
Revision One –
Actually a blast to fly! Something I wasn’t fully expecting given the budget style of the build. RPM filtering does its job and I can reduce the filtering significantly without the motors burning up.
First thing to go were the PLA skids. The PLA itself wore as expected but the infill pattern fails once the shell has been compromised. A reprint at 100% has fixed this. After a heavy hit into a tree then down some concrete steps one of the motors vibrated itself loose but the EMAX Eco’s are on sale at the moment down to £7, making a whole motor replacement extremely inexpensive. Finally, I have switched out the Gemfan 5042 to the HQ5x4.3x3 same in-air feel although I can feel slightly more control at lower throttle on the HQ. The main reason for the switch is the Gemfans taper to a sharp point, making them a nightmare to carry in a bag!
Revision Two-
A continued basher. Still fly’s perfectly now with a few PID tweaks to hone in the style. Torn through a couple of extra motors (mainly the bells) but just before they released the Emax ECO V2 the V1s were going for £5 each so no fear!
The skids have been upgraded to ASA now I have access to the work printer again.
Now runs with crossfire for the added control link security.

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
