Franken-Knight

Finally got to where I want with a toothpick! It's (mostly) a BetaFPV x-knight 3" with a HIFION RC (?) F7 25A AIO board. This board is fantastic since all the important connections are edge-mounted, so soldering to it is a breeze and keeping wires neat and out of the way is a lot easier than regular pads. 25A is likely overkill but maybe later I can convert it to a 4 or 5" with even bigger motors :)

The BefaFPV x-knight frame is super heavy (4mm thick carbon arms!) but also really durable and supports 12mm motor mounts. It's quite a bit more solid than the FPVCycle TP3 frame I've been using with a similar AIO board. I can twist the TP3 arms and feel them torque. I find the heavier frame gives the quad more authority and feels less flighty in tight turns, with a tradeoff of lower battery life.

BefaFPV canopy is slightly modified with a SMA stubby antenna and a pigtail (probably not an ideal mounting location, but I think it looks cool). SMA is just 1/4" so drilling a hole was really straightforward to mount the antenna. I've had issues in the past using a u.fl antenna from my VTX with the clip on the back of the canopy (I've lost no less than 3 antennas that way), so I like the pigtail/sma antenna much better. My wife thinks it looks like Batty Koda from Ferngully (just google it).

  • 176g all-up weight with a 450mah 4S battery
  • 12mm motor mounts
  • 1404 3800kv BetaFPV motors
  • 3x3x3 HQ props -- I was on the fence about these, but I'm really glad I got them. They bite around corners really well without feeling as 'floaty' as I was worried they'd be. Typically I use biblades on my toothpicks but I think i'm switching to HQ after this.
  • I cheaped-out on the RX antenna mounts, but I can't find the mounting retainer for the BetaFPV canopy to use forever tubes. It works though.
