Umma Alpha A85

Some time ago I bought the iFlight Alpha A85 tiny whoop to fly around the house in lockdown and have fun.
But after a while I wanted to convert it to a naked GoPro quad. Unfortunately, it's probably the least converted drone, so there's barely any guides aside from a single video on YouTube which is in Italian :D
So I did some research and I came up with a config that I'm pretty happy with.
I tried to make the build look as clean as I could, so when I show it to people, they know I mean business :D

Overview

I had a few main things I wanted to accomplist with this build

  • DJI digital system. A85 ships with it, so that's already there.
  • Umma85 style configuration because I really don't like having the GoPro offset from the FPV camera like BetaFPV pre-builts, since when you're flying in tight spaces, it's pretty noticeable.
  • Smallest excess footprint possible
  • I still wanted to use the BetaFPV BEC board because I ain't soldering to no GoPro boards :D
  • It had to run Crossfire because I have a Tango 2 radio.

Umma85 Kit

I couldn't order ummagawd's kit because shipping cost to my country was ridiculous. I also couldn't make the kit myself because I don't have access to a carbon cutter.
So I had to find a 3D printable option. After a while, I found the Umma85 style kit for Diatone Tina Whoop, which was fully 3D printable including the base plate and had a BEC-fitting GoPro support bracket. Sweet.
I ended up combining TinaUmma parts with original Umma85 parts for this, the full part set is linked in the part list.

Crossfire

Alt Tag Since I have the Tango 2 radio, so all of my quads are on Crossfire. The issue with this one was that I wanted to make it look clean and have the minimal footprint possible. I couldn't have an Immortal T antenna nearly doubling the width of the quad. I also didn't want to awkwardly attach a standard antenna.
Enter, the Minimortal T by FPVCycle. It was a perfect choice, it's tiny, it's short, it fit perfectly. To secure it to the frame, I used a wire cable tie that came with some USB cable that I had laying around for a while.

Full Size Vista

Alt Tag The other thing I did immediately was to throw our the Nebula camera that came with the quad and replace it with a full size Vista. It doesn't add that much weight and the image quality is very much worth it. Also the 3D print kit was sized for a full size Vista anyway, so it all works out.
For the antenna I used the iFlight antenna that came with the quad cause I broke the original one and ordered 3 spares since.
The way it's attached is, I screwed in the little support piece that comes with the Vista into the frame, which happens to match perfectly with the spacing in the frame, cut the hard enclosing part of the antenna to length and fit it through the support piece. Ended up looking super neat.

Conclusion

This was my first naked GoPro build and I couldn't be happier. It flies great, it records that crispy 4K, I'm definitely using it from now on.

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
