This is my 5th quad build. I didn't want to plunk down the dough for a 6s 5" quad. I wanted something that was super tight and rigid for good freestyle flight performance, could carry and power a runcam thumb or a runcam orange, and something that had the absolute best analog video transmission I could get while keeping it light as possible. The analog feed is very free of electrical noise and penetrates foliage well with 800mw of power from the tbs vtx and the VAS antennas on the quad and the goggles. I thought the fouride was super interesting that you could use the exact same setup, and swap out 4" arms and 4s battery for 5" arms and run 5" props and 3s battery and have a super lightweight 5" quad. All up weight for 4" with 1100 mah battery and runcam thumb is 385 grams with a flight time of about 7-8 minutes of cruising or 3-4 minutes of aggressive flying. Flys great in my opinion but would probably be an agile monster with a lighter battery like 850mah 4s and still get 2-3 minutes of aggressive flying .
I used two 35v 470uf capacitors on the main power lead for the esc and flight controller to smooth out power delivery, and because the way they need be packaged in the frame with the center post it was difficult to fit a 1000uf capacitor onboard. I powered the VTX with a matek bec to take that load from the flight controllers bec. I used a 10v 470 capacitor on the 5v power output side of the matek bec to help smooth out the power to the vtx. I used 3d printed parts I found on rdq to mount the vtx and receiver antennas. I had to shave down the antenna mount prints to fit together on the standoffs, as the fouride is very thin compared to most quad frames on the market. I wanted to do something cleaner for the vtx, bec and reciever, but they are just double stick taped and glued on. I taped the vtx down on the frame and glued the reciever and bec on top. I conformal coated everything as I live in a wet area and you could crash in water or wet ground at any time. This frame is designed to run a dji vista vtx and camera. The dji camera is 20mm and most fpv cameras are 19mm so I had to put washers between the camera and frame when i assembled it. I prewired the flight controller for leds, and also I am powering the runcam thumb from the flight controller. If I run leds I will probably power them with their own bec as the runcam thumb draws over 1 amp when recording at 5v.. Betaflight setup was easy, I used bf4.3 rc6 and used presets for elrs 500Hz, and used filter presets for for super clean build with no esc filtering. I didn't change rates or any other special settings in betaflight.
Proximity cruising flight with a punch out and a few flips, I'd do cooler stuff, but I'm not that good yet.
AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..
Read moreWith the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
