Avant X3 EVO 3”

This quad has been built after that I have been scared of my 5” build. See build ID 30714 or URL https://rotorbuilds.com/build/30714

I have started to understand a few things now about building a quad, but far from being an expert in dimensioning or optimizing. A good friend of mine has recommended some parts, others are the result of my search. The frame and motors and the camera has been based on the suggestion from my friend.

AVANT X3 EVO frame, a small 3” frame that could still host a mini (!) camera. In blue carbon colour, very special looking frame.

Have opted for the DalRC F405 FC and matching 40A 4in1 ESC. This ESC could actually support BLHeli_32, which I could not understand anything by that time…

Trusted RunCam Swift 2 camera, FrSky D4R-II RX and Eachine VTX03 VTX. The usual suspects from my 5” build.

The motors have been the EMAX RS1306 3300 kv ones. These are very tall, 6 mm active length for the 13 stator diameter. Insane power on the top for the size, but I have driven them on a fairly tame battery setup.

Some challenges....

Yes, the battery. That has caused me some worries. I have opted for 3S 450 mAh 45C packs, since I had no idea of what I am doing and have thought that if these work on a superlight 3” setup, then they should surely work on a much heavier 3” setup of mine. Guess what, they did not…

My usual flight times have been around 1 minute per pack on just hovering and floating around. Basically, on a freshly charged pack the load for hovering has caused the cell voltage to quickly get to 3,8V. So almost done.
After some reading and discussions on forums I have learned that this size (weight) of a quad demands more like 3S 850 mAh packs. As a trial I have soldered myself a parallel adapter, which has kept the voltage at 3S, but the capacity has been doubled to 900 mAh. And the quad has started to work!!! So I have got myself some Tattu 3S 850 mAh 70C packs and all was good.

With this quad I have started to fly more controlled, then gradually left the world of STAB and got into AIR-mode. A very stable and forgiving quad, has flown beautifully, actually.

Have sold this one, together with the 5” quad, when I have had my big rethink…

Some flights...

Build a 6s 5 inch and run it on 4s until you're more confident. 2306/2207 1900 or similar. You can use the 4s or go straight to 6s with a throttle cap. Enjoy.

I have had a big rethink 2020 and have started from scratch. First simulators and toothpick flying, then in the end I have built a 6S 5", which I am flying in freestyle. Practice moves in simulator, then try to replicate them in reality, great fun. Love the "ballistic" manner of the 5", you can really fling it and just ride on the momentum. On high power it makes the hair stand on my arms.

A teaser:

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
