5 years into the hobby, decided to go for my first build! I've been flying bind and fly's, as they oftentimes have been cheaper, however now that I wanted to get into racing I decided to build a nice proper race quad. I've repaired pretty much every single component of said bind and fly's over the years, so it really did not feel like some new experience to me, rather a new combination of several past experiences. I generally really enjoyed the build, and am extremely happy that it went pretty much flawlessly. I did not encounter any serious problems during it, and I am proud of myself for having the care and dilligence throughout every part of the build to take note of possible risks and avoid mistakes.
I decided on the OpenRacer frame mainly for the durability, as I like to have the peace of mind and I want to be able to really push myself without worrying. I a beginner racer, still learning technique and lines, so I don't particularly care about setting the fastest possible time through pure power to weight ratio. I also am going to be flying this for freestyle, as it is my dream/main 5 inch drone in general, so I did not go for the absolute racing optimizations/decisions. I am a big fan of the 3D printed canopy, as it offers a lot of customizations and fitment abilities.
Make sure to sand and chamfer the edges of the frame upon arrival if you're buying it from CNCDrones! Either wear a respirator (carbon dust is terrible for your lungs) or sand it underwater (I filled up a sink, worked pretty good).
Emax eco motors as they are budget and legitimetly good, solid motors.
Speedybee stack because I already had one from a previous project. I have heard that the ESC on the stack isn't great, and if I had more money when building this again I would get a more race trusted 20x20 stack. The OpenRacer frame does better with 20x20 stacks in general, although I did not encounter many issues with my 30x30. Only issue I really had was the 3D printed canopy I printed would nick the edges of the stack and not go on fully until I trimmed a bit of the plastic off. Oh, and absolutely flash BlueJay onto the ESC.
Mounted the VTX on a ziptie to the canopy itself.
Got the ELRS starter pack from Radiomaster (Radiomaster Ranger 2.4ghz Starter Combo), I think it is a great deal (60 bucks for 3 receivers and a module!)
Ender 3 TPU Print settings:
Dehydrate the TPU for >24 hours if you live in rain and have untouched exposed tpu that has been out for a couple years.
0.2 mm
220 celsius
15 mm/s
Gyroid Infill, 40%
No retraction
Oh, also, this is a heavy build! If you want something light, don't buy a 30x30, or a massive TPU canopy, or the OpenRacer frame.
Flying weight: 573 grams (CNHL 1300 mah 6s)
CNHL battery weight: 228
Drone without battery: 345
Could theoretically take off ~12 grams by taking off the braces, could cut down the power lead, could use a smaller more optimized canopy, could could could could could. Without buying new components, I think you could theoretically cut down 30 or so grams off of this build.
Overall, I am happy with this build and I think it came out really nice and solid. This is currently my only (flyable) 5 inch drone, and I am genuinely really enjoying it. The build process was very fun, the speed is exhilirating, the looks are sexy, and the fact that everything is nicely within the canopy and mounted and sturdy means I really don't have to worry about stuff breaking or falling off as much as I usually do.
AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..
Read moreWith the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
