4" Tweaker Build

I was running a QAV-R 180 clone (4") for almost 1.5 years, which I really came to enjoy flying. It eventually became a basher that I used for warming up, light racing, and light acro. In early spring, I managed to break a motor in half on a gate, so I rebuilt it with some new components, and also added a RunCam Split for HD recording. Fast forward to late August of 2017. I had another bad crash with some smoke coming off carbon fiber (due to antenna connection short), and the motor screws really dug into the frame. So I decided to start a new build. Good 4" frames seem to be hard to come by, and I don't want another X frame. I've always appreciated Shendrones design, and fly a 3" Shrieker that I really enjoy so I would like to give the Tweaker a try.

My goals for the new build: no X frame (have two others already), re-use my Runcam Split, and have something fun to fly that can keep up with 5" on the race course. Budget is a concern, especially with FPV Fest (in Willard, OH) coming up in a few weeks. Fortunately, I have several parts laying around. After doing inventory, the only thing I really need to purchase are the 2205 motors, though I'm also going to try the Omnibus Betaflight F4 over re-using my current one. I normally purchase "name brand" components after being burned by clone parts in the past. However, after seeing a lot of positive reviews on the Racerstar motors and the Omnibus FC, I would like to give them a try.

Update: after completing the build, I am really amazed how well it flies stock settings! I did a lot of soft mounting, including the PDB, the Runcam Split, and the motors. I designed the soft mounts for the PDB and Runcam Split. All up weight (without battery) is 300g, which I think is pretty decent for a 4" especially with a 5mm thick frame. I can fly 850's or 1300 lipos on this build no problem, getting around 3 minutes. After doing a maiden LOS flight, the motors were cool to the touch.

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
