Red Sands of Mars

First build. I was going for 30% performance, 70% budget.

AUW: 603g

Frame

Not sure if I built the Martian frame correctly as I mounted the arms on top of the bottom plate instead of underneath. It seems quite robust. I've already had a few crashes and it has stood up to the abuse beautifully.

Flight Controller

The Omnibus F4 V3 challenged my soldering skills due to the small through-hole pads. It seems to fly really well only Betaflight 3.1.7. Only minor changes made to the stock PIDs. I updated the firmware to 3.2.5 but haven't yet flown it. I will try the stock PIDs first and see if any changes need to be made.

Motors

All of the motors have a little play in the bells. When cruising at about 30% throttle I see some oscillations in my goggles. I haven't determined if the loose motor bells are the problem. Paired with the Kingkong 5045 props there is a decent amount of thrust and speed. But as this is my first build I probably don't know what I'm missing.

ESCs

No complaints. DSHOT600 is smooth.

FPV Camera

The Foxeer HS1177 V2 is many steps above the 1000TVL board-mounted CMOS I had on my only other quad (Kingkong 260). Video is clear in a variety of lighting conditions. The 2.5mm lens is a nice compromise between less distortion and having a wide FOV. I recently soldered the camera control wires to Motor 6 on the Omnibus F4 with a 220ohm resistor between them. This allows for camera control through my transmitter instead of using the supplied control board. Much easier for parameter changes as lighting conditions change throughout a flying session.

I mounted the camera on a 3D printed mount made for the Martian 220, but the piece that connected the 2 vertical supports was too wide and it wouldn't fit over the standoffs. So I cut the middle part out and made 2 pieces which allow the camera to mount perfectly.

VTX

The DYS MI200MW was giving me trouble initially. It would work well for 5 minutes, then video would start to cut out. And within 5 minutes all video was lost. I resoldered the connections and the problem disappeard. This VTX is known for getting very hot. Apparently the 200mW setting is actually higher and the 25mW is actually lower. I've ran about 30 packs through this quad and the VTX has performed very well on 200mW each time. Very little breakup on 200mW with my Eachine VR D2 Pro googles with the stock antennas (the longer, red ones).

The microphone on this VTX is a disappointment. The sounds is very distorted. Though, the problem may be due to the fact that my VR D2 goggles didn't have an audio wire connected to the DVR (known problem) so I added a wire myself.

Conclusion

I am happy with the way this quad turned out. It flies well and is great for ironing out all my beginner flying mistakes. If I built it again I would probably use a different VTX (probably Eachine TX526).

I imagine that the vibrations in the fpv feed is a result of the bearings. As an upgrade, you could get some dys 2207 2600kv budget motors and some low esr capacitors for the escs. Nice looking build!

Thanks for the feedback!

Are you referring to the DYS Samguk series? Is the thinking that the bearings in them are better than the racerstar motors? I notice some things about the Samguk series I'm not a fan of. The angle the wires are soldered to the motor, the little dab of glue that people are reporting finding on the bell that might be used for balancing, and QC about missing nuts upon delivery. Do you have these motors? Any experience?

Yeah I was referring to the samguk series. I don’t own them but I do know that they perform better than the racerstars. About the bearings, it is known that the bearings on racerstars r not great. However I didn’t recommend the samguk because of their bearings being better but the performance. Sure the dab of balancing glue (it is balancing glue) isn’t pretty to look at but it gets the job done. About the wires, I would just bend them to the position carefully. And about qc, $8-$11 motors aren’t going to have the best qc. If they do it’s at the cost of performance. The samguk motors sacrifice bigger bearings, stronger magnets, and smaller air gaps for decent qc. I’m pretty sure the qc of RacerStar motors are worse and so is the performance. Just buy the screws. I use soft mounts or motor protectors so I have to buy seperate screws anyway (they r like a $1). The rcx 2206 are super reliable. My first quad and third quad have used rcx motors and I have never gotten a dead one. I always get an extra just in case (which with shipping pushes the price of a set of five but counting as four because of qc to $13-$14 which is a lot compared to racerstar but it produces way more thrust and are super durable). The 3b 2207 2650kv motor is great value for $15 but requires a light build to maintain decent efficiency.

As a final thought, when choosing a motor, go for 7075 aluminum, n52sh magnets, hollow steel or titanium shaft, and 4x9x4 bearings. These will give u durability over time and performance, therefore giving u great value. For instance, instead of replacing the motors on my current build because 6 months of crashing, I just spend $20 every six months and put in new bearings. Trust me, I know what it’s like to be on a budget in this hobby. I’m 17 without a job (sports...). I get enough money per year to get one brand new quad or rebuild my old one. I know what it’s like to get products that have little value and those that do. The rcx motors and spedix escs are the most reliable things I’ve found

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
