Drone Eclipse Shiv 5"

It only takes a glance at Drone Eclipse's Shiv frame to understand where they got the name. Wikipedia's definition is simple: "Shiv (possibly from the Romani word chivomengro, "knife"[1]), also chiv, is a slang term for any sharp or pointed implement used as a knife-like weapon."

"Knife-like weapon..." That's what I thought when I first saw the frame. This is my third quad build and was intended to be my first attempt at a "big boy" quad. My first, a QAV210 clone with cheap components and 3S power did its job -- I learned to fly FPV and gained the confidence for more speed and power. So when it was time to build 4S freestyle quad, I knew I needed something sturdier than a thin-plated clone with one-piece arms. I had a lot of options but decided on the Shiv 5" because a) it looked awesome, b) I loved the engineering approach to creating a lightweight but bombproof design and c) everyone who's flown it raves about its durability. But with all that durability comes a lot of weight, right? Wrong. My frame weighs in at just 115g, built out at 365g, and has an AUW of only 520g with a 1300 mAh 4S battery. Strong and light.

Some of the features I absolutely love about this frame:

  • The camera mount design is unique and works great. It's also independent of the top plate, allowing you to run longer standoffs if you prefer and making repairs much easier.
  • The front and rear bumpers are thick carbon and provide great protection and prevent dirt and grass from getting between the plates.
  • The way the arms meet in the center and support each other is very cool and adds to the bombproof design.
  • True X pattern

That does look like a pretty nice frame. How do you like the Racerstar ESCs? I noticed they've got a 30A 4-in-1 coming out pretty soon. That might be a nice basis for a larger build such as this.

The Racerstar ESCs are great so far but everything on this quad is so new that it's hard to tell one improvement from the other. In one build, I changed from Cleanflight to Betaflight, from 3S to 4S, from BLHeli to BLHeli_s, and from low thrust motors to high. So far, so good!

I guess that's why it's nice to do incremental upgrades. Otherwise you don't know what made it fly so great.

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
