Update: The new Caddx nebula pro camera allows you to save 3-4g of weight without really compromising image quality. Bludz was kind enough to design a new canopy that fits the new camera: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4724162/files.

I set out to build a light, efficient, quiet, versatile, digital DJI cruiser and freestyler that I can fly almost anywhere.
It can easily be modified to suit individual needs:

  • For mellow cruising, you can use big 2s batteries with the 1202.5 motors for long flight times. This combination will feel underpowered though. Recommended frame thickness: 2.5mm.
  • For light freestyle I recommend small 450mah 2s or 3s batteries with 1202.5 motors. Recommended frame thickness: 2.5 or 3mm.
  • For hard freestyle, switch to 1303 motors (e.g. the light new Amax Inno Performante) on 3s batteries. Recommended frame thickness: 3mm.
  • For racing, you could even potentially go up to 1404 motors and 4s batteries, but you would need a sturdier frame.

I'm happy to discuss this build in the comments!

how much flight time are you getting with the batteries you've mentioned ?

hey you inspired me to build this toothpick! I am not used to tune in BF, can you share you BF dump?

Lukasyus   Jul 28, 2021

Happy to hear it! I didn't really tune much. Basically all the settings are on stock. I might have decreased the PIDs a tad. Would love to hear how your build turns out!

So here we go

BabyVulture 3"

  • Frame: FPVCycle Babytooh 3mm
  • FC/ESC: Diatone Mamba F411AIO 25A (Betaflight)
  • Motor: Amax Performante 1303 5000KV
  • Props: Gemfan 2 blades
  • Receiver: TBS Crossfire Nano
  • VTX: Caddx Vista (naked)
  • Camera: Nebula v2
  • Battery: GNB 3S 520mAh 80C

It was flying pretty decent, need a few tuning, but then I decided to changed some things like:

  • props with 3 blades
  • not naked vista anymore (not sure how durable is the naked vista)
  • crossfire minimortal
  • replaced the nebula v2 by nebula pro
  • canopy same as yours

But the be honest it is flying worst, I think because of the weight and I am not familiar tuning BF because I use FalcoX (Flightone) on my others kwads

Can you see the props in the frame?

Lukasyus   Dec 10, 2020

That depends on your camera angle. On a medium setting, I can see a little bit of prop on the bottom, but when I fly it's very hard to notice any props. On camera you have to look very closely

how much flight time are you getting with the batteries you've mentioned, more or less?

Lukasyus   Dec 10, 2020

Roughly 4-7 mins, depending on flying style

Nice one! At the end you went to the sanchez air it is really light even on 3mm. I'm still flying mine having fun. I followed your recommendation to use 3016 triblades and in comparison with bi-blades are much responsive and little less noisy I think....gloablly really happy with that combination. On windy conditions is really shaking, improve a bit when I tryed 3s 1000mah. I guess this combination with the top mounting seems quite sensitive to wind....more than others.. With 1000mah I get total weight of 77+82 lipo= 159grs. 8.15 minutes flying smooth with some light acro....I will try next time to be more relax to see how it goes and with zero wind condition. How goes yours with the HV 520 mah?

Lukasyus   Oct 30, 2020

Hey man, yeah I'll have to see about the durability of the Sanchez Air, but it should be fine with 3mm. Glad to hear you're happy with your build! I guess bad wind handling is the price you have to pay for a small and quiet build... 159g is a bit heavy for those small motors, no? Unless you really just want to cruise.

Btw, I did some more testing and updated the description for recommended batteries. I found the 520mah 2s to be very similar to the 450 2s - also in terms of flight time.

Guides & Reviews

AirbladeUAV has done it again and this time they've brought long range to the 5" class! Based on the popular Transformer Mini, the new Transformer 5" Ultralight adopts a lot of the same design philosophies with larger props and more payload capacity. It can fly upwards of 20 minutes on a 4 cell Li-Ion battery pack and in ideal conditions it's got a range of over 4 to 5 miles. In this guide I'll walk..

With the release of the DJI FPV Drone cinematic FPV has become a lot more accessible, but you certainly don't want to crash a $750 drone! The QAV-CINE Freybott is a compact, lightweight cinematic FPV drone that can take a hit and keep going. It's a lot safer to fly indoors and around people. With a naked GoPro or the SMO 4k you can capture some great stabilized footage. In this guide I'll show you..
